Imagine going on a holiday and having an Island all to yourselves! Why not head to Flinders Island South Australia for the perfect Island getaway without the crowds. You can explore the 50kms of coastline, discover white sandy beaches & enjoy the variety of wildlife & scenery. It is located in the Great Australian Bight. It is only a 1 hour flight from Port Lincoln South Australia or 1 hour boat trip 35kms from Elliston.

History

Flinders Island is an island in the Investigator Group off the coast of South Australia. Flinders Isalnd was named by Matthew Flinders after his younger brother Samuel Flinders, the second lieutenant on HMS Investigator, in 1802. The Island is currently privately owned by Peter Woolford and he uses the Island to run his sheep.

Accommodation

You can rent the large home located on the beachfront on the eastern shore and the views surrounding the cottage are fantastic. The cottage sleeps up to 9 people and the room configurations are 2 double rooms, 2 twins & 1 single. It has a fully equipped kitchen, including a microwave and breadmaker, a cool room and deep freezer. The house is fully self contained and all the bedding and linen is supplied. All you need to bring is your own supplies of food and beverages, beach towels and sunscreen and fishing gear.

Things to do on the Island

The Island is a perfect spot for great fishing with an abundance of whiting, salmon, flathead and many more great varieties of delicious seafood. You can charter a fishing boat and head over to the Island from Elliston on a 1 hour boat trip. Also Peter Woolford has provided a 15ft aluminium dinghy with 40hp motor for fishing along with a 4WD for you to use while exploring the Island.

With over 50 kilometers of coastline to explore, there are some great hiking tracks with great photographic opportunities. It is part of the Investigator Group Important Bird Area. The Island features unique native bush and wildlife.  Put on your hiking boots and explore the rocky coast or a dusty sheep trail to wherever it takes you. Visit the scenic landscapes such as “The Cave” and the shipwrecks of Kapara Coastal Steamer and the Madellina.

On the Flinders Island you will find several fantastic spots for swimming, surfing, snorkelling and fishing off the rocks. Experience life at an island pace and laze around relaxing on pristine beaches. You can just sit on a beach and watch the dolphins swim past. There are also tall sand dunes where you can spend the day having sand boarding races up and down them.

Fly from Adelaide South Australia, to Port Lincoln

Charter a plane from Port Lincoln to Flinders Island and fly in yourself as the Island has an airstrip at the back door of the Island stay. You can Charter a fishing boat from Port Lincoln or Coffin Bay or drive to Elliston and Charter a boat. If you are bringing your own boat there is safe mooring available as well.
